Student protests – Tuition fees on the rise again.

Many student are worried of the chance that fees will increase in 2018 for new and continuing students. For universities to have permission by the Department of Education they will have to go through a rigorous process which will categorise them: bronze, silver and gold. however proposals say that for all courses starting in autumn 2018, “all those achieving a rating of bronze, silver and gold will receive the full inflationary uplift”.

The forecast for inflation for 2018-19 from the Office for Budget Responsibility is 3.2%  this would subsequently push a single  years tuition to above £9,500. It hasn’t yet been discussed about fees after 2019 however based on the fees rising in 2016 and potentially 2017 there is a possibility of changes in cost once again.

This recent information has sparked outrage, upset and fear for many student both currently studying and considering further education.

Around 50 student protested outside The University of Leeds on Wednesday 22nd November 2017 at 11:30 am to show how much it’s affecting them. Many had handmade signs reading “Out with Tories” and “NO MORE RISING FEES”.

The non-violent protest lasted around 1 hour however there were two police officers on site in case of any violent outbreaks which have been known to happen previously.

Reflection Two

Over the past week of setting up my WordPress blog I’ve learned and applied many new skills which has been very interesting. One difficulty that arose was thinking of a username that would reflect the content of my blog well. Another issue was creating different tabs to be able to separate content. By using helpful links in the course content as well as the aid of the internet I was able to find alternative and easy ways to resolve these issues.

Finally, one thing that really lingers in my mind was the case of Gap and how they attempted to avoid copyright laws but was caught. Another point is that journalists should only use secondary sources to aid their research but a real journalist will find their own news and facts to make a truly engaging post.

Reflection One

Over the last week of studying this journalism course my view of the this fast paced industry has been confirmed. Firstly the fact that the print world is dying out and the world of online journalism and digital publishing is growing. On the other hand i’ve found out that journalist aren’t always as they are shown by tabloids and are much more positive and empathetic individuals.

The most interesting information that i’ve discovered during the module so far is that there are different types of journalists and not all types of articles written (such as buzzfeed posts) are technically journalism but could be altered and expanded on to fit the criteria.

Over the next 10 weeks i’m definetely looking forward to learning more of the history and evoloution of journalism as i feel that is crucial knowledge for any soon to be journalist. In addition im looking forward to learning more Tee-line shorthand and then apply it to work in and out of other lectures and seminars. Finally i’m very eager to learn the vital interview skills all journalists need to know and then applying this in practice by interviewing an eclectic group of individuals throughout the Reporting 1 unit.

My ideal life as a journalist

The field of journalism is constantly evolving, growing and rising as an industry. It’s the way we can keep society in touch with the current world and affairs that surround us daily. As a keen to be journalist I would ideally like to enter the world of online publishing then branch of in to specific genres of writing based on my interest and passions as I feel a journalist that writes about something they were avid about prior to being a journalist is an amazing writer.

My hobbies? These include: animals and animal conservation, I’m a dedicated supporter of wildlife conservation. A resourceful place to source this news is,

https://www.worldwildlife.org/magazine

This website is regularly updated and is full of lots of interesting articles. In addition, it has lots of video, interviews, clips and more which make all the articles engaging.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/nature/wildlife

This website is also one I use to source news from due to its updates and reliability.

A second interesting area would be geography and travel, as we discover more facts about the world and its nature it’s amazing to be able to take the information and then write about it to inform the public. One of the best places to find information is,

http://www.nationalgeographic.com/

The main reason is because once again the information is reliable and engaging.

In addition, another topic I would enjoy writing about would be travel. The main reason for this is because of how diverse the topic is and how many branches there are. One of the many place that you can source information from is,

https://www.wanderlust.co.uk/

This is a great website because the information is written in assorted styles such as blogs, personal reviews and information.

http://www.thetravelmagazine.net/

This website/magazine is a splendid example too due to the detail used and the relevance of all the information.

Finally, beauty and fashion is a very desirable topic to write about due to the intensity of the industry and the controversy too making it very interesting. There is a wide variety of places to source information however my favourites are,

http://www.vogue.co.uk/

http://www.cosmopolitan.com/style-beauty/

Both websites are highly engaging with good layouts making the information easy to process. In addition, both are updated daily making sure there is fresh information daily.
