Many student are worried of the chance that fees will increase in 2018 for new and continuing students. For universities to have permission by the Department of Education they will have to go through a rigorous process which will categorise them: bronze, silver and gold. however proposals say that for all courses starting in autumn 2018, “all those achieving a rating of bronze, silver and gold will receive the full inflationary uplift”.
The forecast for inflation for 2018-19 from the Office for Budget Responsibility is 3.2% this would subsequently push a single years tuition to above £9,500. It hasn’t yet been discussed about fees after 2019 however based on the fees rising in 2016 and potentially 2017 there is a possibility of changes in cost once again.
This recent information has sparked outrage, upset and fear for many student both currently studying and considering further education.
Around 50 student protested outside The University of Leeds on Wednesday 22nd November 2017 at 11:30 am to show how much it’s affecting them. Many had handmade signs reading “Out with Tories” and “NO MORE RISING FEES”.
The non-violent protest lasted around 1 hour however there were two police officers on site in case of any violent outbreaks which have been known to happen previously.
